Intellectual property rights

Once again for my computer science class, I had to do a reading/writing assignment. This time it was pertaining to the controversy of software programmers and their property rights. Some would argue that with copyright laws, it yields the ability for public to progress in arts and science. This article went further into the legal case involved. I, however, feel it is a controversy in itself because it is almost impossible to regulate illegal downloading. With the advancement of the internet, people have found ways to network and share information, music, movies, programs, etc. freely like it was just on shelves and all you have to do is click and wait for something you want. I believe in rights to creative ideas and thoughts and hardwork (imagine the coding for something like photoshop), but I also believe trying to regulate usage without licenses is hard to come by. I think stopping infringement and having the right to sue is something of an advantage when talking of this issue.

design sponge

Soak up on design, creative do it yourself activities and mini-trends on this design oriented website. For the crafty individual, this site has fun activities and projects to create while inspiring ideas for design for a graphic design student myself. I like coming across interesting sites such as this with a aesthetically pleasing design as well.

2 powers unite

I came across this interesting article talking about how facebook is redesigning itself to be fit for iPhone users. I thought it quite amusing that 2 such popular entities of our social life is working together to allow convenience and usability. It’s actually pretty smart to adjust because both target the younger market. Those with iPhones that like to surf the web, most likely spend a lot of their down time on facebook.

booooored?

Remember when geography was a class… maybe I should have paid more attention b/c with this addictive map game, I’ve found I’m not the great at locating countries abroad. Wanting to be more aware of cultures, I should get better at first locating them on the world map. If you’re bored…wanting to test your geography or wondering where you might want to plan your next overseas vacation, check this site out. In addition to the game, people post pics and recommend places to visit. cool dude.

Everyone should watch this

Not a big youtuber… only time i really get on it is when one of my friends’ tells me about a particular “must see”. I don’t like browsing around on the site looking for funny videos. I mean, is that what people do? But, this video had me laughing out loud, and I think I probably watched it 5 times again after the first time. Two little british kids messing around…adorable.

Closing the digital gap

So, in my CSA class I was given the assignment to read a bunch of articles pertaining to digital division. I thought, “Oh great, long articles on how digital parts of my computer is divided.” I mean, we are learning about a computers’ hardware. But, lucky for me it was kinda interesting reads. …one being this wiki article!

I thought it was pertinent to what we have been talking about and learning in class every Tuesday and Thursday, so blog I am. Firstly, digital divide doesn’t define components of my hardware, insteaddd it’s the term used to refer to the gap between people who have access to information and can communicate through a digital realm and those who don’t.

It’s kinda hard to fathom not being able to access Internet on a minute basis. I can pop open my mac and check my e-mail, entertain myself, blog a little whenever I need to. Crazy to think what if I was one of the millions that don’t have that convenience. Reading all these articles I found that, to me, it’s predominately a global digital divide issue. We are fortunate to live in an advancing society with constant expansions to our technology, (uhhh i mean macbooks that fit in a f’in envelope!) but there are way underdeveloped nations that basically are stagnant, economically, socially, politically, and educationally. What I gained from the assignment was that factors like socioeconomic status, income, and education level influence this gap of digital have and have nots. While our culture may have some on the other side of the digital gapage, our society wishes to close the gap with programs that renovate old computers and give out free educating programs. Our society keeps advancing because technology is advancing, we know something can be better, faster, smaller, safer and we go out and discovery it….but think about those nations that have no means to advance, no resources, no ability to progress, no easy form of information, no computers! no Internet… very sucky.

We want change.

I was asked early in December if I had to vote right now on our next leader, who would I choose? I thought instantly, no clue. Honestly, I barely knew all the potential candidates nor did I know what their stances were. I did know, however, I would be voting Democrat because I feel our nation needs a change. We need change and we need a strong leader with a strong vision, one that focuses on our freedoms, our equality, and truths. Politics is something I rarely involve myself into. There’s just too much if, ands, buts… and I know too little about speaking strongly about my pick. In another respect, I think in past elections, no candidate really stood out for me. We’ve all probably heard back then, it was like voting for the lesser of two evils.

Now, after all our nation has been through, we need some change. Watching Obama I feel a sense of spirit and life resonating from his voice and appearance. Obama’s speech in New Hampshire influenced the artist, Will.i.am, to remix a song. When I saw it, I think it really hit me that Obama is a true visionary, and whichever way you may be leaning towards I say take a look at this site. It may have you inspired, thinking of what kind of leader we could hopefully choose for our future.

album cover for your mixtape?

It’s cool when you think about how great of an outlet the world wide web is when you come across a site like this.

What better way to really understand an artists’ vision, personality, force of inspiration at times than the music they love to listen to. On this Designers Mixtape site, you get a taste of various designers’ music favs as well as their artistic abilities. As a design student, I found it way interesting to look at other’s works. Some even used the site to promote themselves using the words “Hire Me!” on the cover of his album, er mixtape-album. There’s some cool talent out there and even better is that I see from this site that their music taste isn’t half bad either.

Now, if this site isn’t anything exciting or you’re just sick of browsing past real lame playlists, which there are many on that site, check out Pandora’s radio… as if you haven’t already discovered this awesome site already.

Let us be Eco-Livable.

As a graphic design student, we are continually encouraged to practice sustainable design practices within our work. Looking at the big picture, it dawned on me that designers begin the process of sustainability in many cases- how much packaging is wasted, what new products are designed to be manufactured, and how much resources are used in the process. With all this talk about going “green,” I felt I really wanted to learn more about living environmentally friendly.

I believe many of us think about driving hybrids as a main resolution to help clean our earth. Though it is a huge way one could help the environment, I’ve been researching and there are way more little changes we can all make that would add up in a positive way. But, back to the hybrid businesss… I was reading up on some different models along with electronic cars planned to be out on the market, hopefully all over our roads, in a few years. I mean, as much as I love being outdoors, I enjoy the convenience of my car immensely. I think lots of past hybrid models out there look real wimpy (like the Prius), but I found this review on the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid that has received many good reviews. Makes me really consider choosing a hybrid when buying a new car in the future.
